  Four Rules to Quality Copywriting

Are you new to copywriting?  Have you heard about the six figure salaries that copywriters can earn if they have the right skills?  Well, so have many other people, and the field is getting crowded.  You will need to sharpen your pencils and get creative if you want to succeed.  So where do you start?  Well, I’m going to explain the first, and most important, aspect of copywriting in this article.  Whether you are copywriting for websites, headlines, advertisements, or articles, you will want to learn what’s in this article.

What is so important?  Well, I’ll ask you a question first: What is the purpose of any copy?  It’s not to explain whatever product you’re trying to sell or trying to convince a reader of anything.  It is to get the reader to read the first sentence.  That is why you need to write captivating headlines-to get the first sentence read.  Pictures, sub-headlines, and all other elements are geared toward getting a reader to read that first sentence.  Then, you have to make sure that the first sentence is engaging enough that the reader wants to continue to the second sentence, then the third, etc.  Every sentence must have a purpose and urge the reader to continue.

So now, the big question is how to make readers want to read the article from start to finish.  There are four simple rules to keep in mind.  First, create a powerful, persuasive headline.  In this headline, consider that you are making a promise to the reader of what they will receive from reading your copy.  Second, waste no time in letting the reader know what specific benefit they will receive from reading your copy.  If there is no crucial benefit to the reader, chances are they will skip over it and go on to the next.  Third, make sure that you fulfill the promise made through the headline and the benefits.  Finally, give clear, precise proof of every claim.  If you can’t back up what you’re claiming, people will likely assume it is made-up and the whole article will immediately lose credibility.

Whether you are starting out, or just looking to improve your copywriting skills, focusing on those four simple rules will kick your copies up a notch.  Many failed copies are the result of the first sentence not being read.  Keep in mind that your purpose is to get the first sentence, then each one after that read, and you will soon reach great success.
