Becoming a tattoo artist is not as simple as taking some art classes and you are ready to start drawing tattoos on people. It is more involved than that if you want to become successful although you must have artistic talent in order to begin thinking about becoming a tattoo artist. If you cannot draw, you certainly are not going to make it in the world of tattoo creating and designing. It is not a matter of just tracing a picture and filling in the color—you have to draw the entire picture and sometimes the designs are very intricate with details.
You cannot become a tattoo artist simply by going to art school although that is certainly an excellent beginning point. You certainly need extensive training in an art class in order to think of becoming a successful tattoo artist. You must practice, practice, and practice before you will even be ready to look into the feasibility of becoming a tattoo artist. Once you are completely proficient on paper, you are ready for the next step toward becoming a tattoo artist. The process is not a short one by any means, but it is important for you to know everything necessary before you start placing tattoos on customers.
Many people simply buy a kit and begin practicing on their friends. Because of the permanency of a tattoo, this is the worst thing to do. What you want to do when you are fully skilled at drawing on paper is work as an apprentice with an experienced tattoo artist. This will provide you the skills you need to begin work as a tattoo artist. By working with someone else you will be able to develop the fine arts skills you need and learn how to perform some of the most intricate tattoo designs before you work on any customers yourself. You need to work an experience as an apprentice before you can begin to consider working on your own.
Although some apprenticeship programs are free, many will cost you thousands of dollars. If you want to be a successful tattoo artist, the apprenticeship is important so that you can gain the experience you need before working on your own. Success depends upon knowing all of the common designs as well as how to work with the colors and needles. It is not an easy profession to master.
