You hear the phrase “know your audience” all the time, and it applies to a number of different situations. Never is this phrase more true than in copywriting as it is an imperative aspect of creating copy that reaches your target audience. All the market research in the world is ineffective if you don’t take the time to apply it to your messaging itself. By getting to know your target audience and working towards their goals and objectives in what you communicate, you win half the battle.
Effective copywriting is directly targeted at the audience in which it hopes to reach. This means that the individual doing the writing knows and understands who this audience is and what they are all about. No matter what subject matter you are writing at, who specifically you are trying to reach, or what you are trying to accomplish with your copywriting, knowing your audience and speaking to them appropriately will win all the time, every time. It takes some time and research to really get to know your audience, but this is time well spent as you will accomplish the end goal of your messaging by taking this time out of your day.
Knowing your audience goes far above just reading the market research in front of you. Sure understanding the demographics of who you are trying to reach are very important as this helps to devise the key message and make the information pertinent. However you need to get into their mindset and really think like they do. You need to think of what they do, how they spend their spare time, what their goals and dreams are, and what their lifestyle is like. No matter what type of copywriting you are doing and whatever your end goal is, you need to think and act like they do so that your messaging reflects that.
This is particularly true if you are trying to convince your audience to do something or to purchase a product. If you can write a message that speaks directly to them and shows that you understand who they are and what they are about, that will not only be beneficial but end in a better likelihood that they will do what you wish. Knowing your audience is one of the most crucial aspects of copywriting and once you learn that, you will always stand head and shoulders above the rest.
